Under the Bridge (2021)
by Ciara Stein
Artist Statement:

In 1966, the I-10 Expressway tore through the black businesses and oak trees that lined Claiborne Avenue in New Orleans. Today, the underpass is place of memory, environmental racism, and use. The legacy of the avenue is repositioned through everyday acts and moments of collective joy. Here, countless Second Lines, parades led by Social, Aid, and Pleasure Clubs, reach their acoustic climax—with singing, dancing, and jazz reverberating through the concrete structure.
